Happy new year everybody! Excited to be back to continue to share my story with you all. For this year, we will kick off the year with an exciting visit to Momo2Go, formerly known as Himalayan kitchen. It is located in an area often refer to as “little Tibet” on Queen Street West in Toronto. This is my first time at this restaurant as well as this area so I am very excited to try out this place that you offer a sit-down style restaurant as well as momo to go!

History/Fun Facts

So when was Momo found? Momo believed to be dated back as far as the fourteenth century from the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. Later on it was introduced into Tibet, China as well as Japan.

What is typically in Momo? One of the questions you may have is Momo vs. dumpling. In my opinion, Momo is a type of dumpling typically consists of flour dough wrapping options of meat and vegetables. Momo could either be cooked as steamed, fried or pan-fried. Momo also typically gets accompanied with all types of delicious sauces giving them a unique taste.

Value & Vibe

Value: Decent value. Decent portion for an order of Chili Momos for $15. An order of Momo will definitely fill you up!

Vibe: Friendly crowd but I wouldn’t recommend it for a date type of spot. I would say this is great for a take out or grabbing quick food with friends and family vibe. There are decent number of seats at the restaurant but wouldn’t be the best place if you looking to impress someone with the atmosphere.

Taste

Now to the important part, the actual taste! Lets kick it off with what we have been waiting for the Momos!

We ordered Chicken Chili momo. The momos come with the option of dry or “wet”. We chose the dry version. The sauce was a sweet and spicy style sauce with a healthy amount of onions. The “dry” version was not what I quite expected as it would be a typical amount that I would expect in the sauce version. However, we ordered the “wet” version for the fish dish which I show you later and then it makes sense. The chicken filling is on the drier side but combining it with the sauce, they go quite well together.

The next dish that we ordered was the Fish Manchurian. It is a Basa fish deep fried in the Manchurian sauce. For this dish, we selected the “wet” version. As you can see here, the wet version assembles more of a gravy style dish which I assume would be similar if you ordered the wet version for the momos. The dish also comes with a side of white rice.

To my surprise, this was my favorite dish at this place. I have never had Manchurian sauce before but it was fantastic! The taste profile was not quite what I had imagined. It offers a great combination of saltiness and tanginess. The scallion and the spices also added a rich aroma to the dish. The fish was also well cooked. Overall, I would really recommend this dish especially if you like fried fish!

The last dish that we will review for today is the Himalayan Kitchen Special Fried Rice. It has a great flavor, not too much meat but enough for you to get the flavor. The fried rice was very well seasoned. If you are more accustomed to the Chinese style fried rice, this version of fried rice is heavier on the sauce and a little mushier. Overall a decent addition to complete the meal.

Overall I enjoyed this meal. The momos and fried rice are decent but my favorite is the fish Manchurian.
