This August 8’s branch is located at 331 Spadina Avenue, Toronto. This branch is located in the Chinatown area in Toronto. August 8 is a successful all-you-can-eat sushi and dim sum restaurant. It currently has 8 locations near GTA. I have previously been to the Brampton location but for the first time in this Chinatown branch!

Historical Context
For this post, I would like to briefly examine one of Japan’s favorite foods, Sushi. The earliest form of Sushi has been attributed to narezushi. Narezushi was originally meant for fish preservation using fermented rice in which the rice was discarded. In 16th century, another form called namanarezushi was invented in which the vinegared rice was also consumed along with the fish. This is the form that survived until this modern day. However, many forms also have evolved such as chirashizushi (scattered sushi on top of rice bowl), inarizushi (fried tofu with rice), Makizushi (Sushi Roll), and Nigirizushi (a typical form that we associate with sushi with a piece of fish on top of rice). Today sushi is among one of the most popular Japanese dish globally. According to Wifitalents, Sushi industry is expected to reach $31.44B USD global market.

Value & Vibe
Price: I have always found it hard to put a value on an all-you-can-eat especially in North America. I think it really depends on how much you want to eat and what you want to eat. For me, I think it is a reasonable price with a pretty good value especially if I am comparing it with going to a Japanese restaurant and order sushi & sashimi a la carte.
For an adult, it is $40.99CAD for weekdays dinner and $42.99CAD for the weekend. The lunch is slightly cheaper, $28.99 for weekday and $30.99 for weekend.
Vibe: Good vibe. Darker themed restaurant. Friendly service staff. Decent music (they were playing Thai songs for some reason that day, which I certainly enjoyed). Not overly loud but lively atmosphere.

Taste
We ordered quite a bit of food so I don’t think I will go over all of them but instead maybe share more photos than usual and go over some of them.
I think one of the highlights in this meal is definitely the sashimi. They were served in thick cut so you will get a mouthful of sashimi in each bite. My favorites were salmon and butterfish. I personally particularly enjoyed the butterfish as I don’t have it as often!

They also served a variety of cold dishes from scallops to fish to beef.

They were also many appetizers to choose from here we have tripes and shrimp tempura. Shrimp tempura were well cooked with a great complementary sauce that you expected to be served with.

There were also many teppanyaki to select from. My favorite teppanyaki is the beef ribs as they were cooked pretty well. Pretty mild seasoning so don’t expect the same seasoning as some other places. However, I thought it was a good complement to other other raw dishes that I had.

Lastly the dessert. We got the custard bun, ice cream, cheese cake and tiramisu. Custard bun is usually my favorite dessert so my standard is quite high. The bun that I had here was overall decent with runny yolk on the inside but I think its flavor could be slightly better. However, I am impressed with the quality as I definitely have had much worse. The ice cream and the cakes were well done for an all-you-can-eat style meal.

Overall, I think the taste and quality were great for an all-you-can-eat place! The menu’s selection was also decent with a good combination of raw food and cooked food that will allow different people from the same party to choose from.
